Introduction
In 1991, diamonds were first discovered in Canada’s Northwest Territories (NWT). That discovery put both the Northwest Territories and Canada on the world map as a significant producer of quality diamonds and resulted in the establishment of state of the art cutting and polishing facilities in the North and the development of programs to train diamond professionals.
In 2000, the Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) instituted an in-house certification process, under the brand GOVERNMENT CERTIFIED CANADIAN DIAMOND, to authenticate NWT diamonds. With this certification program, the GNWT assures consumers that GOVERNMENT CERTIFIED CANADIAN DIAMOND diamonds are mined, cut, and polished in the NWT. These select stones are the only diamonds in the world that bear this unique proof of their origin and authenticity.
Canadian Government Certification
A GOVERNMENT CERTIFIED CANADIAN DIAMOND means that the Government of the
Northwest Territories has followed the diamond through each phase of its
development - from mine through the cutting and polishing process. Each and every
GOVERNMENT CERTIFIED CANADIAN DIAMOND is guaranteed to have been mined in the NWT
and cut and polished in Yellowknife – and has achieved an exceptional quality
cut, clarity and brilliance.
An official certificate issued by the Government of the Northwest Territories accompanies each GOVERNMENT CERTIFIED CANADIAN DIAMOND with specific, individual information about the diamond. It must be noted that only the Government of the Northwest Territories certifies Canadian diamonds. Any certification or authentication other than this may go to prove that the diamond was mined in Canada but cut and polished elsewhere.
High Standards
Before diamond companies are able to build mines in Canada’s Arctic, they are required to conduct a thorough environmental assessment of their proposed project. They must also adhere to stringent environmental regulation and high labor and operating standards as set out by the Government of Canada and the Northwest Territories.
Mining companies must ensure that any impact on the environment is minimal. Social and economic impacts on northerners and their communities must also be carefully reviewed.
A Unique Product
To a certain consumer a product that is authentically Canadian is important. The Government of the Northwest Territories diamond certificate carries a serial number, and is individually recorded in a confidential centralized database. These diamonds are cut to the world’s highest cutting standards.
Canadian Diamond Brands
Currently, there are several Canadian Diamond brands in the market. Some of them are Arctic Glacier, Amadena, Arctic Fox, The Caprice, Canadian Goose Diamonds, Canadian Ice Diamonds, Maple Leaf Diamonds, Eskimo Arctic Ice Diamonds, Flanders Collection, Pole Star Diamonds, etc. However, only diamonds accompanied with the Government of the Northwest Territories Certificate of Origin are guaranteed to have been mined, cut and polished in the Canadian Northwest Territories.
Only POLAR BEAR DIAMOND and POLAR ICE brands carry the NWT Government Certificate of Authenticity.

Like the GIA Certificate shown below every GIA certified diamond that is mined, polished and cut in Canada must accompany a certification of authenticity from the Government of Northwest Territories. And the GIA certificate must specify the Canadian NWT Certification.
